aalila thaaliyumaay...

After a long hiatus I am back with another malayalam song. This time it's the song "Aalila Thaaliyumay" from the movie "Mizhi Randilum" (2003). This is another of the versatile music director Ravindran's masterpieces. This song is set in the "sudha saaveri" raga and has a very rich feel and flow to it. In the movie, it's sung by the great singer P.Jayachandran.

I played around with the video editing software again and mixed it up with the video of the song from the movie. Let me know your comments.

ponveene en ullin...

One beautiful aspect of malayalam music is that the melody is usually preserved even in fast songs. Nowadays this aspect is getting lost due to the influence of tamil and hindi music, but there are quite a few "melodious fast numbers" (however weird that might sound in modern times) in vintage malayalam film music. A song that fits into this category is "Ponveene En Ullin" from the movie "Thaalavattam". It's certainly a song to remember for a long time. Here is my attempt to sing this song:

vathil pazhuthilooden...

I present yet another beautiful melody of yesteryears composed by one of the most respected musicians in the malayalam film industry - V.Dakshinamoorthy Sir. The song is "Vaathil Pazhuthilooden Munnil" from the malayalam movie "Idanaazhiyil Oru Kalocha". I fell in love with this song the very first time I heard it.

nilaavinte neelabhasma..

The song "Nilaavinte Neelabhasma" from the malayalam movie Agnidevan (1995) is yet another of my favorites. The beauty of the song lies in its recitation-like simplicity. The MG brothers (Radhakrishnan as the music director and Sreekumar as the singer) have delivered a melodious song to remember.

While recording this song I hit upon the idea of adding it to a video found on YouTube of the original song. After a couple of hours of wrestling with some video editing software I finally got the audio from the original removed and my own voice added. Check it out !

thenum vayambum...

Here is a song that is also dear to my heart, composed by one of the greatest music directors in the Malayalam film industry, Raveendran. Originally sung by Yesudas, the song Thenum Vayambum from the movie of the same name became quite a hit in the early 1980s.

unarumee gaanam...

One of my favorite melodies of all time is the song Unarumee Gaanam from the Malayalam movie Moonnaam Pakkam. This song won singer Venugopal the Kerala State Award for the best playback singer the year the movie was released. Venu's soulful and effortless rendition is a treat to the listener. The music is by the maestro Ilayaraja. Here's my humble attempt to sing this song:

ghar se nikalte hi...

The song "Ghar Se Nikalte Hi" from the Hindi movie Papa Kehte Hain stands out from most other Hindi songs due to its enchanting melody. This was one of the songs that catapulted Udit Narayan to fame. Needless to say it's also one of my favorites.

aakasha gopuram...

Malayalam film music is known for simple, melodious tunes. One of them is the song "Aakasha Gopuram" from the movie Kalikkalam. The music is by Johnson. Venugopal's soothing voice made this song quite memorable and it's also one of my favorites. Here's my humble attempt at singing this song:
